Condemns Attacks on Central Elections Commission Offices Ramallah,
13-12-05: Dr. Mustafa Barghouthi, General Secretary of the Palestinian
National Initiative (PNI) and Head of the Independent Palestine list running
in upcoming legislative elections, today condemned attacks by gunmen on
Central Elections Commission (CEC) offices in Nablus and the Gaza Strip. The attacks would appear to be the result of internal conflict within the governing Fatah party over its list of candidates standing for election. Dr.
Barghouthi stressed that the assaults are part of ongoing efforts by certain
groups to undermine and weaken the democratic process in Palestine. He demanded that the Palestinian Authority take immediate action to control internal security, and to curb such attacks. He also voiced support for the right of the CEC to maintain its independence and to carry out its work free from any violation.
