Israeli Violations Severely Threaten the Truce

The Palestinian National Initiative

11 April 2005

The truce between Israel and Palestine is in imminent danger due to Israel’s unwillingness to adhere to their side of the agreement.  Contrary to their promises, the Israelis have not released more prisoners or turned over more cities to Palestinian Authority control.  Israeli soldiers continue invading and terrorizing Palestinian communities and shooting, injuring, and killing Palestinians.  The illegal settlements are still being expanded, and the illegal Apartheid Wall is still being rapidly built, an attempt to prejudice the outcome of a negotiated solution.  Jerusalem is being squeezed of its Arab character, the most visible exemplification being the threats by Jewish extremists to the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.  The PNI, in an effort to expose the Israeli violations and refute the Israeli narrative, is publishing the following list of Israeli violations between 8 February and 10 April:

Israeli violations of the truce
between 8 February and 10 April, 2005:

Number of Palestinians killed

14 (including 7 children)

Number of shooting incidents

458

Number of Palestinians arrested

403

Number of invasions

794

Flying checkpoints

557

Closures

707

Settler attacks

92

In addition to this, the rate of uprooting, bulldozing, and confiscation of thousands of dunams of privately-own Palestinian lands has actually increased since the truce began.

The Israeli government has also announced plans to build around 9,500 new housing units for West Bank settlements, 3,500 of which will be located in occupied East Jerusalem and destroy the contiguity between the West Bank and East Jerusalem and between the north and south of the West Bank.  Israelis have also continued to deny and diminish the Arab nature of Jerusalem through illegal purchases of Arab and Christian property in Jerusalem and the continuing threats of extremists against the Haram al-Sharif.

These violations are extremely dangerous and adversely affect the trust of Palestinian society in peaceful solutions.  Through summits and meetings, the Israeli government is continuing to fool the world into thinking that it is interested in peace and committed to the truce while it continues to violate Palestinian rights and the truce agreement itself.  It is unreasonable to assume the Palestinians will sit idly by while the possibility of a viable Palestinian state is destroyed in full view of the world.  A peaceful and just solution is desired by all, but it will not be possible if Israel continues on its current path and the international community does nothing.

The PNI has asked the Palestinian Authority to expose Israel’s violations to the world and cease all false negotiations with Israel as long as they are being used merely as a cover to hide Israel’s aggression from the international community.

The PNI also asks the Palestinian Authority to call directly for an international peace conference with a basis in UN resolutions and international legitimacy and to take the ICJ decision against the Apartheid Wall to the General Assembly of the UN.  We cannot keep silent about what is happening or revert to the cycle of reactions.  We must take the political initiative from Israel’s hands.
